CAPITAL OF TIBET & LHASA CITY

Regardless of how much pre-departure reading you may have done Lhasa will overwhelm you with its extraordinary sights and it's not only the altitude 3650 M that will take your breath away the magnificent holy sites such as Potala Palace, former seat of the fifth Dalai Lama Nagdban Blobzan Rgyamtsho as presides over the city on the red hill Built white Palace in 1645 at the top of the red hill the potala palace 115.703 high and area of 138025 square meters the palace contains 1,000 rooms, 10,000 shrines and 200,000 religious statues the old city revolves around the Jhokhang Temple and the quaint Bakar Market that surrounds it the Jhokhang Temple Built in the seventh century is the holiest Buddhist shrine in Tibet and houses the Jowo Sakyamuni image brought to Tibet from Nepal by princess Bhrikuti Devi, the daughter of the Nepalese King Anshuvarrnan.

 

Its mural paintings finely worked golden roofs and other artworks are something to see at a little distance from the old city core Lhasa is also a modern capital of concrete high-rises fancy department stores and wide boulevards sleek taxis zip about an average trip cost 10 Yuan. SHIGATSE & XIGATSE CITY

An excellent excursion from Lhasa is a circuit that takes in the towns of Shigatse Gyantse and Tsetang it offers a comprehensive experience of Tibet in a neat Itinerary Shigatse Altitude 3900m lies some 274 km to the west of Lhasa and it is second largest city in Tibet the high way runs alongside the Yarlung Tsangpo & Brahmaputra river passing through narrow gorges and broad river valleys farmers plowing their fields with Yaks Sheep grazing on the vast plains awesome sand dunes and rocky hills in the distance are the scenic rewards of this Journey.

 

The Tashilhumpo monastery, is Built in 1447 by the first Dalai Lama, Ngehdun Drupa who born in 1391 and died in 1474 the Shigatse's is most important cultural and religious site the main chapel here contains a huge 26 meter high statue of Maitreya as Future Buddha other Buildings contain images of ( Sakyamuni as the present Buddha ) white and green Taras and embalmed bodies of past Panchen Lama.

 

GYANTSE CITY

Shigatse to Gyantse Altitude 3820m is 94 km of gravel road but it is good road Gyantse's symbol is the Kumbum Stupa which is 32 m high and contains 77 rooms and 100,000 images of the Buddha of the 112 chapels here 23 are open to the public A prince of Gyantse had it Built in the style of a 108-sided mandala by craftsmen from the Kathmandu valley it is the finest example of 15th century Newar art extant in the world Pelkor Chode Monastery and Gyantse Fort Built atop a massive rock are other major sight here.

 

The road from Gyantse to Lhasa 260 km the road goes over three mountain passes one Sima La pass 4380m high two Karo La pass 50, 55 m high and three Ghampa La pass 4794 m high the highway skirts the Yamdrok Tso & Yamdrok Lake before twisting up the Ghampa La pass from the top of which there's a fantastic view of the Lake on one side and the Yarlung Tsangpo or Yarlung river on the other side.

 

TSETANG THE FIRST CAPITAL CITY OF TIBET

Tsetang is 195 km from Lhasa southern Lhasa is known as the cradle Tibetan civilization the ancient town offers a numbers of side trips that illustrate Tibet's early history the Valley is the Phakmodru dynasty who established the Capital of whole Tibet from 1349 until by the Rinpung fiefdom in 1435.

 

Yarlung Dynasty the first King of Tibet Nyatri Tsenpo who arrived from the heavens a fortress of Yambhu Lakhang the first Palace in Tibet Built for the first Yarlung King and the Tandruk Monastery one of the three royal Buddhist Temples some of the major sight of the main city Nedong, Tse-Tang.
